Food Shortages May Force World into Vegetarianism

According to an article in The Guardian’s Global Development section, leading water scientists have issued a serious warning regarding global food supplies. In order to avoid serious food and water shortages, the world may have to switch to a more plant-based diet. It’s an unfortunate fact in our opinion that 20% of the human population derives it’s protein from animal products but this may have to drop to 5% to make up for these massive shortages. According to the report by Malik Falkenmark and colleagues at the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), “There will not be enough water available on current croplands to produce food for the expected 9 billion population in 2050 if we follow current trends and changes towards diets common in western nations.”

A plant based diet is one of the solutions proposed by these scientists. According to them, a widespread adoption of a plant based diet would increase the amount of water available to grow more food in our “climate-erratic world.” Animal protein-rich food consumes five to 10 times more water than a vegetarian diet(!)

What do you think? Would it be so bad if more of the population had to convert to a plant-based diet?
